Job Title: Bus Driver Trainee

Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
GENERAL PURPOSE:
This is a transitional position whose purpose is to familiarize the bus driver trainee with the responsibilities, rules, and regulations of the Transportation Section while training to earn a CDL-B of the appropriate endorsements required to transport students. The trainee will assist the Transpiration Supervisor and bus drivers with the cleaning and general maintenance of assigned buses as well as picking up needed supplies. The trainee will also assist in moving assigned vehicles, empty of students, from campus to campus.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Train to acquire a CDL-B Texas driver’s license with Passenger and School Bus endorsements. This training will include studying for the pre-trip exam and working with your supervisor and a Lead Bus Driver to become proficient in the operation of all TLCA-San Angelo fleet vehicles.
- Perform minor maintenance duties and keep assigned bus clean and fueled
- Assist bus drivers with cleaning and maintaining TLCA-San Angelo fleet vehicles, as assigned.
- Shuttle non-CDL-B required vehicles from campus to campus, as directed.
- Maintain all emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, fuses, and reflectors in all applicable TLCA-San Angelo fleet vehicles
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks, as assigned, and keep supervisory personnel informed of any issues
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with the following requirements:
- Driving record must meet insurability standards
- Possess the ability to obtain a CDL-B Texas driver’s license with Passenger and School Bus endorsement and meet all other requirements to drive a school bus within 6 months of the date of hire.
- Possess the ability to follow assigned routes and adhere to a strict schedule
- Possess the ability for analytical thinking and problem solving
- Be able to effectively manage time
- Possess effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
- Work requires sitting for long periods of time
- Intense concentration is required, particularly in poor driving conditions and sometimes with immediate distractions
